Synthesis of Fluorinated Amphiphilic Triblock Copolymer and its Application to Proton Exchange Membrane for Fuel Cells |

There is a strong need for polymer electrolyte membrane capable of sustained operation above 100 °C to increase the efficiency and carbon monoxide tolerance of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells. One of the approaches is to use amphiphilic rod-coil block copolymers where the rigid rod block renders high thermal and mechanical property and flexible coiled block provides efficient proton conduction pathway due to micro-phase separation. In this study, we have designed and synthesized novel triblock copolymers comprised of fluorinated poly(arylene ether) (rigid hydrophobic block) and sulfonated poly(styrene-co-acrylonitrile) (coiled hydrophilic block). Various triblock copolymers with diffenent hydrophilic chain length and degrees of sulfonation were synthesized by controlling the reaction time and the monomer feed ratio. Controlled hydrophilic chain length and degrees of sulfonation resulted in different phase-separated morphologies and different proton conductivities. |
