Recently, stimuli-responsive systems which change their structure and physical properties in response to external signals have been interested in new methods with wide applications in biomaterial science and technology such as drug delivery systems, cell culture substrates, and biosensing. Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) is sensitive, reversible, and reproducible to thermal stimulation, in contrast to those of other polymers. Below the lower critical solution temperature (LCST), the PNIPAM is swollen in water. However it undergoes abrupt changes in volume and shrinks at high temperature. Fluorescein is widely used to label cells, and proteins of human body with fluorescent imaging application. Also, it has been used to measure intracellular pH values that have excellent biocompatibility and high sensitivity. Above mentioned, we synthesized PNIPAM hydrogel that has thermo- and pH-responsive properties. We could get results that sense temperature and detect pH in aqueous solution. |
