End group cross-linked highly sulfonated poly (arylene ether sulfone) membrane prepared by thiol-ene reaction for fuel cell application |

End group modified sulfonated poly(arylene ether sulfone) (SPAES) was cross-linked by thiol-ene reaction using polymeric cross-linker, vinyl polysulfone (VPSf). The cross-linking effects depending on contents of polymeric cross-linker were investigated and the cross-linked SPAESs (C-SPAESs) show significantly increased physiochemical stabilities compared with pristine SPAES. The electrochemical properties of C-SPAESs were also studied. Although the proton conductivity of pristine SPAES with high degree of sulfonation (DS), 67 mol% was not evaluated because of the low membrane stability, those of the C-SPAESs could be estimated owing to the enhanced stabilities and the values were also higher than those of SPAES with the DS of 50 mol%. Moreover, the cell performance of C-SPAES_7 which shows optimized proton exchange membrane properties reaches maximum power density up to 0.692 W cm-2, which is higher than that of Nafion 212 membrane at 80 oC in fully hydrated condition. |
