For the fabrication of circular-polarizing reflectors, we newly designed and synthesized a chiral monoacrylate molecule, abbreviated as BCRM. We doped the BCRM monomer into a nematic diacrylate monomer (RM257). It produced the oily streak texture of cholesteric phases and it confirmed on the POM. We controlled the pitch of the cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) by changing the temperature and successfully tuned the reflection colors. By irradiating UV light to the 10 wt % BCRM-doped cholesteric mixture, we obtained a polymerized film. The film exhibited excellent mechanical and chemical stabilities. Since the BCRM reflects right-handed circularly polarized light, no light was reflected when the opposite circularly polarized was irradiated on the film. It will be the key for the fabrication of flexible reflectors or smart paints. This work was supported by BK21 Plus program, the BRL 2015042417, Mid-Career Researcher Program (2016R1A2B2011041) |
