Exfoliated structure of thermally stable organo-clay in PET |

Nano-clay has been widely used as inorganic reinforcements for polymer matrix to create polymer nanocomposites with improved barrier, mechanical & thermal properties. Interlayer cations (Na+) of general organo-clay are replaced with alkyl ammonium cations to enhance the dispersibility. However, the thermal instability of alkyl ammonium cations has limitation of high processing temperature.In this work, we tried to prepare thermally stable organo-clay with alkyl imidazolium cations. Therefore, modified clay by imidazolium cations was improved thermal stability than ammonium cations.Especially, TEM images of PET-clay nanocomposites show that modified clay by imidazolium cations was more effective for exfoliated structure of clay than ammonium cations. |
