Zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) membrane is highly promising for H2-selective separation walls in membrane reactors used for water gas shift reactions because of their efficient molecular sieving properties that favor H2 transport. In this study, ZIF-8 membranes were fabricated using in-situ counter diffusion method. The place for ZIF-8 membrane formation differs because of the reaction rate difference between the Zn source and the mim molecule. To control the diffusion rate, we used γ-Al2O3 layer-coated α-Al2O3 disc (γ-/α-Al2O3 disc) and an intact α-Al2O3 disc. ZIF-8 membranes in the α-Al2O3 disc (membrane ZIF-8_α) and the γ-/α-Al2O3 disc (membrane ZIF-8_γα) were formed on top and inside the support, respectively. Both type of membranes persisted at 200 and 250 °C for up to 72 h, but the ZIF-8_α and the ZIF-8_γα started collapsed after ~2 h and ~10 h, respectively. This indicates that the ZIF-8 membranes could be protected by the γ-Al2O3 layer. |
