New Type of Extraction Solvent for Microalgal Lipid Extraction: Fatty Acid Methyl Esters |

Microalgae are one of the most promising sustainable energy sources for biodiesel production. However, the high costs of the downstream process are a major bottleneck for commercial-scale production of biodiesel from a microalgal biomass. We propose a new process of biodiesel production that utilizes biodiesel as an extractant for microalgal lipid extraction. Biodiesel/methanol based extractant showed high lipid extraction efficiency from wet microalgae. The efficiency obtained from the biodiesel-based extractant was comparable to the chloroform/methanol method. This result suggests that the biodiesel-based extractant is an efficient technique for the downstream process of microalgal lipid production. |
