Hollow fiber membrane distillation (MD) modules have potential for practical application in large scales due to their high packing density and compactness. However, little information is available on the optimization of their design compared with the plate and frame MD modules. Accordingly, this study applied computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to analyze the hydrodynamics of hollow fiber MD modules, which allows the optimization of their shapes and dimensions. Various designs of MD modules were examined using the CFD models. The membrane area was fixed and the dimensions such as the length and diameter were adjusted. |
