Cholesteric liquid crystals (CLCs) have a periodic helical structure. This helical structure of CLCs can reflect the light when the helical pitch is comparable with the wavelength of visible light. The reflected light from the CLCs is circularly polarized with same handedness of their helical structure. So CLCs can exhibit two types of circularly polarized light by helical sense. To display two types of optical property of CLCs, we integrate the left-and right-handed cholesteric liquid crystals using triple-emulsion template. The triple-emulsions drops comprises a left-handed CLC core, thin aqueous layer, and right-handed CLC shell. Reactive mesogen in the shell is polymerized by UV, and the complex emulsions are stabilized. This photonic microcapsules display a mixed color under plain condition, and the photonic properties of left-and right-handed CLC can be selected by light-handedness. |
