제목 Thiol-Modified Cellulose Nanofibers Enabling Effective Functionalization Routes and the Adsorption of Heavy Metal Ions
초록 Cellulose is one of the attractive materials as an eco-friendly and renewable natural polymer. In particular, its fibrous structure has drawn attention due to high surface area, high porosity, and flexibility. To expand the applicability, tailoring their surface chemical properties is essential. Hence, efficient chemical reaction routes under mild conditions are necessary to develop. Herein, we demonstrate thiol-functionalized cellulose nanofibers that can offer three different chemical functionalizations: (i) metal adsorption, (ii) thiol-ene nucleophilic Michael addition, and (iii) radical thiol-ene click reaction. Furthermore, it is shown that the surface immobilized thiol is effective to adsorb heavy metal ions, opening up the potential of cellulose materials as a heavy metal removal membrane. We finally highlight the potential of the presented chemistries to expand to functionalized surfaces of other carbohydrate-based materials to achieve the desired properties.
