The main composition of sewage sludge (SS) is proteins (42.8%), carbohydrates (8.9%) and lipids (14.5%). Lipid was firstly extracted from SS with 92.9% of extraction efficiency by the mixture of chloroform and methanol, and subsequently used to produce biodiesel with 39.0% (g-biodiesel/g-lipid). Simple sugars were then obtained from the lipid-extracted SS by pretreatment and enzymatic saccharification. The major components of sugars were glucose (48.2%) and galactose (17.4%) and the other each sugar occupied less than 15%. These sugars were used to produces bioethanol by a commercial yeast. The ethanol yield of sugar from acid pretreatment, acid pretreatment followed by enzymatic saccharification and sole enzymatic saccharification were 22.30%, 40.89%, and 46.10%, respectively. After that, the residual SS was pyrolyzed in a tubing reactor for bio-oil production. The yield of liquid, gas and the solid product was in the range of 10.1–33.3%, 2.5–17.7%, and 52.0–87.4%, respectively. |
