제목 A Study on the Copolymerization Kinetics of Phenylethyl Acrylate and Phenylethyl Methacrylate
초록 Copolymers of phenyl alkyl acrylates/methacrylates are clinically used as soft materials for foldable intraocular lens (IOL) to treat cataract. In this study, copolymers of 2-phenylethyl acrylate (PEA) and 2-phenylethyl methacrylate (PEMA) of various compositions were prepared by a free radical polymerization with benzoyl peroxide (BPO) as an initiator. The compositions of the copolymers were determined by 1H-NMR analysis. The reactivity ratios of the monomers at the copolymerization were calculated by the conventional Fineman-Ross and Kelen-Tudos method. The reactivity ratio of PEA (r1) and PEMA (r2) were estimated as 0.30 and 2.17, respectively. The glass transition temperature of the homopolymers and copolymers were measured by DSC. The molecular weight and polydispersity indices (Mw/Mn) of the homopolymers and copolymers were determined using gel permeation chromatography (GPC). These results would provide useful information for the application to foldable IOL materials.
