A biphenyl-type liquid crystalline epoxy(LCE) monomer having twin mesogenic structures was synthesized for new thermosetting resins with higher thermal conductivity. The LCE monomer and its cured thermosets were characterized by infrared & nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscpy, differential scanning calorimetry, polarized optical microscopy, and laser flash apparatus. The LCE monomer made with biphenyl twin mesogens which were connected with an alkylene spacer formed a smectic-like or a nematic-like structure after curing depending on the used hardeners. In addition, the thermal conductivities of cured LCEs varied according to the types of hardeners and showed higher values than that of the cured thermoset of a general bisphenol epoxy. |
