Theranostic Carbon Nano-Onion Nanopods for Magnetic Resonance Imaging Guided Photothermal therapy |

Carbon based fluorescent nanomaterials have gained significant interest in recent times because of their biocompatibility and enhanced biological fluorescence property. Here, we developed water soluble white-light-emitting carbon nano-onions (WCNOs) and present them as a novel multi-channel fluorescent nanomaterial for biomedical applications. The developed WCNOs possessed fullerene like structures with 5-8 concentric rings. Moreover, the synthesized WCNOs displayed multi-channel excitation dependent emission in blue, green and red channels. We further coated the surface of WCNOs with manganese oxide (WCNO-MnO2) to develop Hydrogen peroxide responsive bioimaging and biosensing nanomaterials. Interestingly, WCNOs and WCNO-MnO2 displayed photothermal activity under NIR irradiation. WCNO-MnO2 displayed enhanced heat generation compared to WCNO. In vivo PTT results indicates WCNO-MnO2 as an efficient PTT agent that can prevent cancer progression. |
