Graphene has attracted attention of engineers due to their outstanding electrical, mechanical and thermal properties. Graphene can be used as nanofillers in polymer composite to impart improved performance. In this study, effects of graphene on the mechanical and thermal properties of various polyurethanes (PUs) prepared from different diisocyanates were investigated. Natural graphite was exfoliated by ultrasonication in tetrahydrofuran and then small amounts of PU prepolymer was added to prevent aggregation during the drying process. PUs were synthesized from poly(ε-caprolactone) diol, 1,4-butandiol, and three different types of diisocyanates, hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI), 4,4′-methylenebis(phenyl isocyanate) (MDI), and 1,5-naphtalene diisocyanate (NDI). It was found that graphene/PU nanocomposite based on MDI showed remarkable improvement in the mechanical properties compared with other graphene/PU nanocomposite prepared from HDI or NDI. |
