Polyelectrolyte complex (PEC) membranes based on two anionic polysaccharides composed of sodium alginate and carrageenan, were prepared by interacting with Ca2+ ion in 5 wt.% CaCl2 aqueous solution. In order to grant the effect of molecular sieving in molecular levels to PEC membranes in the separation of water and methanol mixtures, their morphologies modified by using vapor-permeation-thermal treatment (VPTT) method. The results showed that the water selectivity of the membrane in a vapor-permeation process was so high that no methanol was detected by gas chromatography (GC), and their permeation characteristics were dependent on the condition of VPTT. |
