Fruit browning mimetic coating for soft biological material interfaces |

The outer surface of an organism is an important barrier to maintain for protection against harmful external factors. This barrier between the external and internal environment is vital for organism’s survival and thus, requires a method of repair in case of damage. Such instances can be seen in apple browning and insect cuticle formation when exposed to air. We propose apple browning/ insect cuticle mimetic protective coating at the biological interface. The key components of the fruit browning chemistry mimetic protective coating were pyrogallol (PG) and polyethylenimine (PEI). PG and PEI mimic fruit browning chemistry by forming a film at the oxygen exposed area using the same chemistry. Usage of this PG/PEI on soft sample readies it immediately for vacuum experiments such as SEM due to the swift formation of protective coating on the surface of the sample. |
