Polypropylene (PP) has poor oxygen barrier properties and is not used alone in food packaging applications. Because of this, CNF and nanoclay have often been employed to improve oxygen barrier properties. In this study, nanocomposites were prepared by fixing the CNF to 1 wt% in the PP matrix and increasing the content of nanoclay from 1 to 5 wt% through melt processing. In addition, nitrogen (N2) plasma treatment was performed to improve the affinity between the hydrophobic polymer PP and the hydrophilic nano-sized fillers (CNF and nanoclay). Based on the results of various analyses, Nanocomposites containing 1 wt% CNF and 3 wt% nanoclays in the PP matrix showed the best performance, and the Young's modulus and oxygen barrier properties were improved by 51 and 28%, respectively, compared to neat PP. These results suggest that PP/CNF/nanoclay nanocomposites can be applied to a variety of barrier packaging applications. |
