Polymer Blend Membranes of sulfonated poly(arylene ether ketone) for DMFC |

A lot of researches have been in progress for substituting Nafion to new improved electrolyte membranes. Polymer blend of sulfonated polymer with high proton conductivity and non-sulfonated polymer is one of the most studied things. These sulfonated polymers with high degree of sulfonation begin to swell too strong and thus lose their mechanical stability. Therefore additional supporting system for retaining mechanical stability was needed. Non-sulfonated polymer was introduced to retain mechanical stability of membranes. Blend membranes with highly sulfonated poly(arylene ether ketone) and lowly sulfonated poly(arylene ether ketone) were prepared by solution blending method. Phase separation mechanism between two polymers was applied to control the morphology and the properties of blend membranes. The morphology and the phase separation mechanism could be controlled by varying the blend ratio and the degree of sulfonation of polymers. |
