Biomimicking of Natural Leaf: Physical and Chemical Approach |

Biomimetics is imitation of nature unique characteristics for developing techniques to solve human problems. One of best examples of biomimetics is biomimicking natural leaf. There are two approached for biomimicking leaf; physical vs. chemical biomimicking. In physical biomimicking, the leaf surface is imitated to fabricate wettability controlled surfaces. We have tested various nanostructures for this purpose. One example is ZnO nanowires we fabricate using hydrothermal solution growth. Our ZnO nanords surface can be controlled for their wetting state from superhydrophilicity to superhydrophobicity by controlling the surface energy with different carbon chain length coating molecules. On the other hand, in the chemical biomimicking natural leaf, photosynthesis is imitated to develop artificial photosynthesis system. In current study, we demonstrate the application of solar water splitting for regeneration of superhydrophobicity in underwater condition. Also we present recent accomplishment in developing PV-electrolysis based artificial leaf system for applications in various environmental conditions. |
