The Origin of Conductivity Enhancement of Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) Films by Polar Solvent Treatment |

We have investigated the effect of polar solvent treatement on the conductivity enhancement of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) films by employing electrical transport, optical reflectance and X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements. Polar solvent treatment includes adding polar solvents such as dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) into PEDOT:PSS aqueous solutions before drop-casting and immersing PEDOT:PSS films in polar solvent baths such as an ethylene glycol (EG) bath. Both the temperature dependent d.c. conductivity and the optical conductivity indicate that the addition of polar solvent induces phase transition from the insulating regime to the metallic regime in the PEDOT:PSS film while the solvent bath treatment increases charge carrier density of PEDOT:PSS. The origin of this phase transition was deduced from XRD diffractograms. |
