제목 Potential use of cupryl and ferryl species in water treatment
초록 The reactions of Fe(II) and Cu(I) with hydrogen peroxide (i.e., Fenton (-like) reactions) produces ferryl and cupryl ions (i.e., Fe(IV) and Cu(III)), capable of oxidizing organic compounds in water. These high-valent metal species are less reactive than hydroxyl radical. However, they can be successfully used in selective oxidation of organic contaminants as well as disinfection. In spite of recent advances in the chemistry of Fe(IV) and Cu(III), still limited information is available for the reactivity of these oxidants with organic compounds and their efficacy on microbial inactivation. In addition, the mechanisms through which organic compounds are oxidized and pathogens are inactivated by these species are not clearly understood. Our recent studies investigated the nature and reactivity of Fe(IV) and Cu(III) produced by different Fenton (-like) systems, and assessed the potential of these species for the oxidation of organic contaminants and the inactivation of microorganisms.
