Improving High-Voltage Stability of Nickel-Rich Layered Oxide Battery Cathode using Functional Additive |

Three-components cathode active materials of Li(Ni1-x-yCoxMny)O2 (NCM) are promising for high-energy density Li-ion batteries, and their capacity can increase by increasing the Ni content and the charge cut-off voltage (>4.2 V). However, their high voltage performance is difficult to achieve because of anodic decomposition of conventional electrolyte above 4.2 V vs. Li/Li+. At the high charge voltage condition, anodic instability of electrolyte and cathode-electrolyte interfacial reactions can result in a degradation of cathode material, leading to a rapid performance capacity fade. In order to overcome these issues, we have been searching for high-voltage electrolyte additives. Here we report a new electrolyte additive for charging the LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2 cathode to 4.6 V. Studies of surface film formation would be discussed. |
