Nafion nanofibers containing silica nanoparticles were prepared by electrospinning. Nafion has been widely used in biosensor making due to its high chemical stability and good biocompatibility. To increase its reactive surface area the fumed silica was used, which has a diameter of 7 nm. The silica nanoparticle has an extremely large surface area, and it will be formed on the surface of Nafion/silica nanofibers to increase the surface area. Since the silica has the silanol groups, it could be chemically modified for many applications such as immobilization of enzyme or catalysts. In this study, Nafion/silica nanofibers were prepared by coaxial electrospinning. Extraction of the core-shell structured Nafion nanofibers to remove the shell polymer resulted in the formation of Nafion/silica nanofibers with the increased reactive surface area by the exposed silica on the surface of fibers. The morphology of the fibers were characterized by TEM and SEM. |
