Liquid core waveguides confining the light through liquid have a great potential in optical sensing by applying absorption or Raman spectroscopy and optical amplification by using liquid gain medium. To realize it, there comes a challenge to be considered, such as achieving a proper cladding material because a large number of liquid solutions have a refractive index around 1.33, while materials that generally used for waveguides have a larger refractive index above 1.40. We review here various types of liquid core waveguides that overcome the previously mentioned consideration for bio-chemical sensing and, by extension, DNA-based optical applications. |
