Evaluation of Blood Compatability of Nitinol Alloy Coated with Novel Biocompatible Zwitterionic PEG for Peripheral Arterial Stent |

Blood-compatible biomaterials have been of utmost importance for a variety of medical applications. Poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) is blood-compatible and sulfobetaine (-N+-SO3-), a well-known class of zwitterionic polymer is biocompatible as well. In this study, we have tested a nitinol alloy whose the surface was coated with zwitterionic PEG to develop blood compatible peripheral arterial stent. The newly synthesized zwitterionic PEG was grafted onto the Nitinol alloy using oxidation, followed by surface treatment. Since the previous reports hinted that blood compatibility of zwitterionic PEG-grafted Nitinol alloy could be closely related to the molecular weight (MW) of PEG, the effects of different MW (1000, 2000, and 4000Da) of PEGs as well as sulfobetaine, were individually examined. The blood compatibility of surface-modified Nitinol alloys was then evaluated using plasma protein adsorption and platelet adhesion test. |
