Recently, hydrogels have been received enormous attentions as smart materials applicable to various uses from biotechnology to nanotechnology. Hydrogels exhibit volume changes under the external stimuli such as pH, temperature and composition change of solvents. For the hydrogel materials, it is simple to form networked structures of polymer chains by photo-polymerization. Hence, hydrogel architecture with desired patterns and multi-dimensional structures can be generated using photo-lithography and holographic lithography. Here, we optimized the experimental conditions for well-defined photonic structures. 2 & 3-D patterned hydrogels can be used as photonic crystals with diffractive and reflective optical properties originated from their periodic structures. In particular, a visually perceptible color change can be observed. Based on the unique swelling property, patterned hydrogels have potential applications as functional microfluidic chips and adaptive photonic crystal devices. |
