Preparation and Properties of Polystyrene / Organic Clay Nanocomposites using a hydroxyl-functionalized Polystyrene as a compatibilizer |

Polystyrene (PS) is one of the most widely used polymers. Many researchers have been interested in the PS / Organic clay nanocomposite because of its good mechanical, thermal properties and flame retardancy. In this study, the PS / organic clay nanocomposites using a hydroxyl-functionalized polystyrene (PS-OH) as a compatibilizer were investigated. The PS-OH and MMT (10A) master batch (PS-OH/10A = 3/7) was prepared in a THF solvent. This solution was stirred for 3h and sonificated at room temperature for 1h. D-spacing (001) of the organic clay (PS-OH/10A) was increased compared with that of the 10A. The PS / organic clay nanocomposites were prepared by melt mixing in a twin screw extruder with temperature, screw rpm and clay contents. From the X-ray diffraction (XRD) results of d-spacing of the clay and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), it was showed that the PS was intercalated, and the thermal stability and dynamic modulus of the PS / clay nanocomposites were increased compared with those of the pure PS.
