Recovery of platinum(IV) from acidic solutions by PEI-modified polysulfone/E. coli composite fiber |

Platinum group metals (PGMs) are widely used as catalysts in various industries such as agriculture and medicine due to their specific physical and chemical properties. Sorption is the promising technology for the recovery of PGMs from wastewaters. In this study, the composite fiber of polysulfone and Escherichia coli biomass was modified with polyethylnenimine (PEI) to enhance the sorption capacity. SEM and FT-IR analysis were carried out to confirm the PEI-modification on the fiber. To determine sorption performance, kinetics and isotherm experiments were conducted in acidic Pt(IV) solutions. As a result, the maximum uptake of PEI-modified polysulfone/E. coli composite fiber (296.16 mg/g) was 6.56 times higher than that of the unmodified one (45.11 mg/g). However, negligible increase (9.68 to12.68 mg/g) in sorption capacity was observed after pristine polysulfone modification. |
