Sulfonated high-performance ion containing polymers can be produced by a direct copolymerization method. These materials are extremely applicable to ion exchange polymeric electrolytes and may be particularly advantageous in direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC). Especially, sulfonated poly(arylene ether sulfone)s (SPAESs) are recognized as one of the most representative candidates because of their higher ion exchange capacities and lower methanol permeabilities compared to NafionTM and other similar perfluorinated copolymers. In this study, we prepared the high molecular weight SPAES membranes with the different bisphenol moieties such as biphenol, bisphenol A and bis(hydroxyphenyl)fluorene by a nucleophilic aromatic substitution and a sequent solution casting method. The resulting membranes were confirmed and characterized by various analytic approaches. Finally, the possibilities with a view to applying these membranes to DMFC applications were examined thoroughly. |
