Tailor-made dual-functional alginate microadsorbents: Application to simultaneous adsorption of cesium and strontium |

We have developed Centrifugal Microfluidic System (CMS) that can synthesize functional materials with various shapes and size at micro-level through assembly of conical tubes, Eppendorf tubes and needles. The size and shape of the beads and fibers produced using CMS were controlled by the concentration of the solution in the micro-reservoir, the centrifugal force, and the distance between the needle orifice and the top surface of the solution containing calcium chloride. Based on the optimized conditions, Janus beads were produced and Janus beads of those applied to selectively removing both radioactive contaminants such as Cs+ and Sr2+. Specifically, Janus adsorbent was synthesized by dissolving Prussian blue and hydroxyapatite into sodium alginate solutions and injecting them into two microneedles. To produce effective Janus shape, we have carried out physical/chemical characteristics of the alginate-based solutions. |
