Evolutionary molecular biology opened a new window forincluding unnatural oligonucleotides or amino acids. In vitroselection systems were originally limited to selection from arandom sequence library comprising natural components (fouroligonucleotides or 20 amino acids). Unnatural oligonucleotideswere incorporated into a selection library using enzymaticreactions (PCR or RNA polymerase). In contrast, incorporationof unnatural amino acids was achieved by the development ofmethods to synthesize misacylated tRNA and selection systemsusing a non-living system. The number of unnaturalcomponents incorporated in the selection library is increasing, and in the review (1), we focus on this period of transition in theselection library from a ‘‘natural soup’’ to an ‘‘unnatural soup’’. We have employed themethods for selecting oligonucleotide and peptide aptamersfrom a natural or non-natural library. Here some recent progress in peptide selectionsfrom a post-translationally modified library will be reported. By incorporation of azobenzene, fluorogenic group, and inhibitor, we succeeded in photo-responsive binding, fluorogenic, and highly inhibitory peptides, respectively. Ref. (1) T. Uzawa, S. Tada, W.
