The nuclear accident at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power station in 2011 released a huge amount of 137Cs into natural environments. However, the commercial Cs adsorbents cannot be directly applied to natural environments because there is no easy way to collect them after use. In the study, we developed a magnetic beads composed of polyvinyl alcohol(PVA)/Polyvinylpyrrolidone(PVP) hydrogel, magnetic nanoparticles, and metal hexacyanoferrate to remove 137Cs. Through dropwise addition of mixed aqueous solution of iron salts and PVA/PVP solution into ammonia, magnetic PVA/PVP hydrogel beads were fabricated based on the simultaneous formation of magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles and cross-link of PVA chains. The metal hexacyanoferrate was formed inside of beads by addition of metal ions and hexacyanoferrate ions. The resulting magnetic PVA/PVP beads showed the good removal performance for Cs. Moreover, the beads selectively adsorbed Cs even in the presence of competing cations. |
