Energy-saving materials for cooling buildings have interested many researchers in the related industry and academia. As results of the efforts, IR-cut film, solar cell on the surface of building and styrofoam was developed. But these cooling materials could decrease the temperature of buildings by only less than 10 degreeC. Herein, we investigated thermo-sensitive polymers as the cooling materials. We used Poly (N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) hydrogels with inorganic particle composite films and showed a decrement of 15 to 30 degreeC. We confirmed that the film could interrupt water evaporation from the PNIPAM hydrogels. When temperature increased above the low critical solution temperature of PNIPAM, the inorganic film cracked and made a fast pathway for water evaporation. This thermo-sensitive cracking behavior could be a new strategy of cooling building materials. |
