In order to meet our constantly inflating, high energy demand, a renewable energy source such as hydrogen, solar and biomass fuels are being actively developed. At the same time, improving the current energy efficiency is also critical. Conventional separation processes are mostly thermally driven phase-change based, which require as much as ~ 45% of total energy produced in downstream petrochemical and manufacturing processes. Membrane-based gas separations are attractive alternatives due to their relatively high energy efficiency. Combination of advanced membranes and advanced sorbents may contribute to save a substantial amount of energy, resulting in a sustainable future. In addition, they can be utilized to efficiently mitigate energy-related CO2 emissions. This presentation will introduce advanced membranes and sorbents with their applications to improve the energy efficiency of current separation processes as well as to alleviate global warming-induced climate change. |
