ZnO is a well-known effective photocatalyst for water, but its practical utilization is restricted to applications that employ UV light; this is due to its high bandgap and fast recombination rate of photogenerated charge carrier. In this study, we prepared nitrogen-doped ZnO containing different mole % of nitrogen to enhance the photocatalytic activity, thereby exhibiting a broad absorption in the visible region; this can enable the utilization of a large range of the solar spectrum. The nitrogen-doped photocatalysts were prepared using the hydrothermal process, followed by calcination at 500 ℃. The incorporation of nitrogen into the ZnO lattices and their crystal structures were confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and powder X-ray diffraction. Methylene blue was photo-degenerated up to 89.1% using nitrogen-doped ZnO as compared to the 61.0% degeneration using pure ZnO. The rate of dye degradation became almost 2.3 times faster by employing 1mol% nitrogen doping on ZnO. |
