Weathering causes considerable changes in chemical and physical properties of spilled oils. For lightly weathered oils, significant losses occur in low molecular weight n-alkanes, however, the ratios of n-C17 to pristane and n-C18 to phytane have been found to be virtually unaltered from those measured for source oil. In accordance with the case of fresh or mildly weathered oils, alkane and isoprenoids analyses can be used for source identification. But in heavily weathered oils, n-alkanes and even isoprenoids occasionally may completely be lost. Geochemical studies which can be used as means of oil-related environmental assessment has been performed with spillled oil residues at seaside area. Data interpretation for weathering processes and environmental forensic investigations has been done including the oil type differentiation, peculiar biomarkers fingerprinting, diagnostics of specific degradation occurrence and source identification of spilled oil. |
