Effect of copolymer structures on the properties of composite membranes containing ionic liquids for water free polymer electrolyte fuel cells |

The perfluorosulfonic acid (PFSA) membranes are widely used as a membrane of polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEFCs) at room temperature. However, the PFSA membranes significantly decreased ionic conductivity and mechanical stability under no humidification and high temperature. Recently, hydrocarbon membranes having good thermal and mechanical stability have been investigated as an alternating membrane at water free and high temperature condition. To ensure appropriate ionic conductivity for the hydrocarbon membranes, the composite membranes were prepared by various random copolymers and ionic liquids. The composite membrane was characterized by small-angle x-ray scattering (SAXS), thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA) and impedance spectroscopy. As a result, the composite membranes of 60PES/40PES, 6F-60PES and FDP-60PES showed good ionic conductivity at high temperature and anhydrous condition. Furthermore, the composite membranes exhibited good thermal and mechanical stabilities. |
