The weak mechanical property of hydrogels is an endemic problem whenever we try to use them for actual applications. One of the research about enhancing mechanical strength is making composites with silicone rubbers. However, it is hard to make composites of silicone and hydrogel because of their completely different surface energies. In our previous work, we successfully produced composites of PDMS and PNIPAm by making micro-channels in PNIPAm with directional melt crystallization technique, and subsequently infiltrating PDMS into the micro-channels. It was found that modulus of composites extraordinary increased as swelling ratio increased. In this work, relationship between mechanical strength and swelling ratio was investigated in detail. There exist regions of both increasing and decreasing slopes of mechanical strength as the swelling ratio increases. The results show that the composites have unique properties as the silicone-hydrogel composites for future applications. |
