Cyclodextrins(CDs) are cyclic oligosaccharides with the torus-shaped structure consisting of a relatively hydrophobic cavity and polar exterior. The basic property of CDs is their ability to form selective inclusion complexes with a variety of size suitable for guest molecules. Retinol (vitamin A) is involved in the creation and maintainance of healthy skin. It also reduces wrinkles and helps to restore UV damaged tissue. However, the use of retinol is limited by its inherent instability to UV light and oxygen. The aim of this study is to prepare the nano-sized carrier using modified cyclodextrin for encapsulation of fat-soluble vitamins (i.e., vitamin A, vitamin E). To improve the solubility of cyclodextrin in the aqueous solution, carboxymethyl β-cyclodextrin (CMCD) was prepared in an alkaline solution with monochloroacetic acd. Various vitamins were introduced into the carboxymethyl β-cyclodextrin (CMCD) to prepare a CMCD-vitamin complex which is highly stable against oxidation, heat and evaporation. The inclusion of carboxymethyl β-cyclodextrin was investigated using FT-IR, 1H-NMR, and 13C-NMR. The loading efficiency and vitamin release profiles from the CMCD were characterized. |
