The development of reversible optical memory and light-driven chiral molecular switches is attracting tremendous interest since they hold a great promise in applications as well as fundamental science. A promising solution lies in the photoresponsive chiral nematic phase whose unique helical structures and physical properties can be tuned upon light irradiation. Such a phase can be achieved by doping chiral molecules including photoresponsive group into a nematic liquid crystal host. We are synthesized binaphthyl-based azobenzenes chiral dopants. The new chiral molecule was prepared by azo coupling reaction, esterification and its chemical structure was characterized by NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry. Photoresponsive helical twisting power change also studied with reflection spectroscopy of chiral dopant doped CLC cell under UV irradiation. In this presentation, detailed synthetic procedure and optical properties of BINAP based photoresponsive chiral dopants will be discussed. |
