Here, we envisioned bottle brush copolymers with a backbone having a π-conjugated system. We expect that introduction of rigidity on the backbone would improve self-assembly behavior of copolymers and formation of fine nanostructures. We synthesized bottle brush copolymer having π-conjugated backbone, poly(phenylene acetylene) (PPA). The copolymer was obtained by various polymerization techniques using a trifunctional initiator. We synthesized PS-b-PMMA macromer by atom-transfer radical polymerization and nitroxide-mediated radical polymerization. After that, the macromer was polymerized by the Sonogashira coupling in grafting-through manner to yield the final copolymer, which showed strong fluorescence under UV irradiation. However, this coupling method seemed to be rather uncontrolled. We then employed the Suzuki polycondensation method to circumvent this problem. In this case, polyfluorene backbone was attempted instead of PPA one. |
