The synthesis of starch sulfate as an osmotic agent for a new peritoneal dialysis (PD) solution |

Glucose has been used for 3 decades as an osmotic agent in PD solutions, however it has a serious disadvantages such as short ultrafiltration times, damage to the peritoneum and increasing the glucose concentration in body fluid. In order to overcome these disadvantages, a new high molecular weight osmotic agent, starch sulfate, was synthesized by sulfonation reaction of starch. It was characterized by various measurements such as 1H NMR, FT-IR, SEM and elemental analyzer(EA). According to degree of substitution(DS), the aqueous solubility of starch sulfate was significantly changed. Starch sulfate was dissolved into the water to 8wt%, which had pH 1.0~pH3.0 due to sulfate moiety. Using 1N NaOH and buffering agents for adjusting pH 7.0 and biocompatibility, it shows 128~147mM/L (Na conc.) and 305~405mOsm/L(osmolarity) that is similar to other PD solutions. In case of SD rat experiment, starch sulfate based PD solutions showed a good biocompatibility and ultrafiltration effect. |
