Polymer Blend Membranes for the Direct Methanol Fuel Cell |

The DMFC shows considerably lower performance than that of PEMFC because of the inefficient methanol oxidation and the crossover of the methanol through the membrane. Poly(arylene ether ketone)(sPAEK) shows lower methanol permeability than Nafion and good chemical and mechanical stability. To reduce the methanol crossover, Nafion membranes was modified by the solution blend with sulfonated aryl polymers, methanol barriers. The cross-sections of composite membranes showed phase separated morphology. The morphology and the phase separation mechanism could be controlled by varying the blend ratio and the degree of sulfonation of polymers. The methanol permeability of blend membrane was much lower than that of Nafion because sulfonated aryl polymers acted on methanol barrier. The proton conductivity showed same trend with methanol permeability. |
