Preparation of Protein-Carbon Nanotube Hybrids and Assessment of Their Biological Activity |

Carbon nanotubes have a great potential as materials for applications ranging from molecular electronics to ultrasensitive biosensors due to their extraordinary electronic and mechanical properties. When biopolymers such as proteins are allowed to interact with carbon nanotubes, hybrid products are formed with specific and tailorable chemical properties, which are suitable for a series of biomedical applications. Here, a facile and solid-state method for the preparation of protein-carbon nanotube hybrids is reported by using the high-speed vibration milling technique. They were characterized by UV-VIS-NIR spectroscopy and their solubility in water and stability were investigated. The structure and changes of enzymatic activity of the proteins in the hybrids were studied by circular dichroism and IR spectroscopy. In addition, SEM and TEM also confirmed the formation of the nanohybrids. |
