Recently, researches on biocomposites have been actively performing in order to develop environmentally friendly composites. Biocomposites consist of natural fiber and polymer matrix. Natural fibers as reinforcements are biodegradable and have useable structural properties at relatively low cost. The use of biodegradable polymers as matrix for biocomposites is also considering actively since this would result in completely biodegradable composites. Polylactic acid is of considerable interest as a biodegradable polymer in medical applications and also for use as a matrix for biocomposites. The object of this research is to introduce current researches on polylactic acid as a biocomposite matrix. Physicochemical properties of polylactic acid are compared to those of other biodegradable polymers and synthetic polymers for biocomposite matrix. Also, thermal stability, radiation stability, and hydrolytic stability of polylactic acid are discussed. |
