These polymers have no ether linkage on polymer backbone that was not attacked by nucleophiles (H2O, hydrogen peroxide, hydroxide anion and radical). It has obtained high molecular weight by Superacid-catalyzed polyhydroxyalkylation after Friedel-Crafts. Sulfonated polymer were synthesized by condensation of isatin polymer with potassium salt of 3-bromo-1-propanesulfonic acid and grafted polymer film was acidified by immersing in 1.0 M sulfuric acid solution at 80 °C for 6 h. The sulfonic acid composition was regulated at 25~80 mol % of propylsulfonic acid in order to achieve expected ion exchange capacity of maximum 2.0 meq/g. The copolymers were of high molecular weight to afford a tough membrane by solution casting. The structure properties of the synthesized polymers were investigated by 1H-NMR spectroscopy.
