Cholesteric liquid crystals (CLCs) are one of the widely used LCs in display industries because they can make a circularly polarized light. Due to this optical feature, CLCs could be used as reflective films, color filters and E-paper. In general, CLCs are made by mixing a host nematic LC with various kinds of chiral dopants. Therefore, chiral dopant plays an important role in determining the optical properties of CLCs. In this study, four different types of chiral dopants were synthesized and characterized. Their physical properties and chiral twisting powers were characterized with NMR, DSC, XRD, POM and UV/Vis/NIR spectrometer, respectively. Depending on the mesogenic units in chiral dopants, optical properties of CLCs were different. We will attempt to explain the results with a viewpoint of molecular structure of chiral dopants. |
