Blending of immiscible polymers has been considered as easy route for high performance materials. However, the properties of polymer blends are limited by the poor miscibility between polymers. Nanoparticles can be used as compatibilizers if they are localized at the interface between polymers. In this study, we investigated the effect of PS-b-PSN3 coated gold nanoparticles as compatibilizers on the PS and PTPA blends. The surface properties of the gold nanoparticles were precisely controlled by polymer shell to be preferentially located at the interface. In addition, due to the enhanced thermal stability of the particles, the blend morphology was observed without any aggregation of the particles after annealing at high temperature above 220oC. The nanoparticles reduced the dispersed domain size of the polymer dramatically even at 0.1 particle volume percentage. We will discuss the effect of the nanoparticle on the blends compared as that of PS-b-PTPA quantitatively. |
