Biodegradable, biocompatible poly(lactic acid) is a versatile material in tissue engineering and drug delivery system. This work was focused on the thermodynamic property of poly(lactic acid)/dialkyl phthalate system. Theta temperature and interaction parameter are important thermodynamic parameters of polymer solution, which represent the extent of the interaction between polymer and solvent. In order to investigate the effect of stereoregularity of the polymer on the interaction parameter two different enantiomeric polymers, poly(l-lactic acid) and poly(dl-lactic acid), were used. A series of dialkyl phthalates, with different number of carbon atoms in the alkyl chain, was adopted to control the solvent quality. Theta temperature was estimated from the critical solution temperatures of different molecular weight polymers via optical microscopy with temperature control. The interaction parameter was determined by Zimm plots of static light scattering.
